John Paul II Collegiate’s Kristina Binette has been named the Battle West District Female Coach of the Year.

Each year the Saskatchewan High Schools Athletic Association (SHSAA) names one female and one male Coach of the Year for each athletic district, with Binette receiving the distinction this year for her continued work with JPII athletics.

Binette, who has been coaching at John Paul II since the year she first started at the high school in 2010, said she’s “extremely grateful and overwhelmed” by the recognition.

Just this year alone, Binette coached a Crusaders’ junior girls developmental volleyball team, in addition to coaching junior girls basketball, junior girls soccer, and track and field, and working with the football team.

While the various sports and teams may mean a lot of time commitment outside of the classroom, between after-school practices, weekend tournaments, and traveling with the team, when asked what it is that keeps bringing her back, Binette’s answer is simple.

“It’s fun!” she said. “Coaching allows me to engage with students in a different way. Practices, games, and road trips are a chance to learn together and make memories.”

Principal at JPII, Bruce Yockey said Binette’s dedication to her students and work with the school teams make her a great selection as Coach of the Year.

“We’re very proud Kristina is the winner for Battle West as the Female Coach of the Year, and it is really well deserved,” he said.

“She’s been heavily involved as a coach at JP since she started here, coaching multiple teams throughout the season and sometimes two teams during the same season. She’s been extremely generous with her time and giving to kids that come to JP and are involved in our extra-curricular programs.”
