P.A. RCMP using motorcycles to stop distracted and unsafe drivers

Jun 28, 2023 | 5:00 PM

The Combined Traffic Services Saskatchewan (CTSS) Prince Albert unit recently unveiled its two new motorcycles.

They’ll be used to help stop people who may be driving and using their phones or aren’t wearing a seatbelt.

“They’re very discrete, they hardly get noticed by the public,” said Sergeant Jeremy Knodel.

He explained they’re able to get right up to vehicles and aren’t often recognized as being police vehicles.

These types of vehicles are needed as distracted and unsafe driving continues to be a major problem in the province.

So far in 2023, over 1,400 charges have been given to people caught using their phones while driving across the province. There have also been nearly 1,200 charges for people not wearing a seatbelt. Roughly 800 warnings for the two instances have also been given out.

Meanwhile, these motorcycles aren’t technically new to the area.

“We did have them towards the end of the year as myself and Constable (Ian) McVicker both took the (training) course in July, the beginning of August,” Knodel said.

They’re now a permanent fixture and mark the only police motorcycles being used in the north-central region.

The plan is to use them across the entire region, visiting as many rural communities as possible.

“We will spend a good amount of time in the City of Prince Albert as well,” Knodel said.
