SUMA and Sask. Polytech to develop municipal administration courses

Sask. Polytech is celebrating a new addition to its business diploma program and Prince Albert students can benefit from it.

Recently, the Saskatchewan Urban Municipalities Association (SUMA) said it was investing $250,000 to develop the municipal administration specialty for the business diploma program at Sask. Polytech.

“With this generous contribution, SUMA demonstrates its commitment to the future of local government leadership and to strengthening Saskatchewan’s communities,” said Dr. Larry Rosia, president and CEO. “Graduates with this new specialty will be trained to successfully manage the day-to-day operations of a town or municipality as a government manager or official.”

On top of the $250,000, SUMA announced the establishment of the Laurent Mougeot Memorial Scholarship at the SUMA Convention this spring. Mougeot worked in several different roles with the City of Prince Albert and moved to Regina to become CEO of SUMA. He passed away in December 2022.

“SUMA understands the importance of having well-educated municipal administrators who are prepared to take on the significant responsibilities associated with the position. Administrators are the foundation of a successful municipal office,” said SUMA president Randy Goulden. “We are proud to support this initiative and are grateful for the opportunity to honour Laurent’s memory in such a significant way.”

The curriculum for the municipal administration specialty has been developed based on the direction of SUMA, the Saskatchewan Association for Rural Municipalities (SARM), the Urban Municipal Administrators’ Association of Saskatchewan (UMAAS), the Canadian Association of Municipal Administrators (CAMA) and the Saskatchewan Ministry of Government Relations and their members to make sure graduates are prepared for different roles in municipal administration.

Current business diploma students who have completed year one or completed the business certificate are eligible to start the municipal administration specialty in fall 2024.
