Long Weekend Weather

Hot weather to start, rain and cooldown to follow for long weekend

A long weekend means making plans in the great outdoors and relaxing in the sun for many. As with any long weekend, the question is: will Mother Nature actually cooperate this time around?

For the Canada Day long weekend, and for Canada Day itself, the weather is shaping up to have some stormy moments. When it’s clear outside, however, the temperatures will hit what many consider to be the sweet spot of not too hot and not too cold.

“For this time of year, late June or early July, the normal max temperature is around 23 C,” said Samantha Mauti, meteorologist with Environment Canada. “For the next couple of days, you’ll have a couple of days of above normal temperatures with forecasted highs in the high 20s. Not quite warning criteria for a heat warning, but pretty close for Friday and Saturday.”

If you’re planning on getting out boating, fishing, golfing, or any other outdoor activity, it might be worthwhile to bring an umbrella. The last part of the work week and the first part of the long weekend are showing warning signs of being rainy.

“A risk of showers and thunderstorms this afternoon into this evening,” Mauti said. “Then once again, a risk of showers Saturday night into Sunday as we see a cold front swing through.”

That same cold front that’s bringing the rain will drop the temperature as well, which is good news if you’re not a fan of the heat. It’s not going to get cold enough, however, to put a damper on any outdoor plans you have.

“For Sunday and Monday, you have cooler temperatures, with forecasted highs in the low 20s to high teens,” said Mauti. “As that low pressure system passes, on the backside, the possibility of showers once again.”

According to Environment Canada, low pressure systems don’t last as long in the summer and the heat tends to win back out in the end. That’s exactly the case this time around, with temperatures rising steadily from Monday onward.

“As of Thursday, into next week, it looks like things start to warm up a bit,” said Mauti. “There will be some above normal temperatures to end out the week.”

Environment Canada will update their forecast in case any of the possible storms over the next two days become severe. The greatest chance of rain, as of this writing, is on Saturday night.
