New sentencing circle set for arsonist in Sen. Allan Bird fire

Jul 6, 2023 | 5:11 PM

The woman who set fire and burned the Senator Allen Bird Centre to the ground in 2022 has had her sentencing circle date reset.

Gina Beatty was not in Prince Albert Provincial Court on July 6, but her lawyer appeared for her and proposed jointly with the Crown Prosecutor that a new date should be set.

The circle is to include community members representing Beatty and the Prince Albert Grand Council (PAGC), which is the victim in this case.

Not all of the participants could make the original date of July 7, so a new date of Aug. 9 was set at the provincial courthouse.

Her mother has said that Beatty was using meth and fentanyl and that she was “completely out of it” when she set the building on fire.

The centre, which was a gathering place for PAGC members in Prince Albert was destroyed in the blaze on April 15, 2022.

No plans have yet been formalized to replace it.
