Wilkie Farmers Market started by family, for community

There are few sights that say summertime in Saskatchewan like an outdoor Farmers Market.

A staple of the season in many towns and small city centres across the province, and especially in the northwest, it is something one family from the area is hoping to establish in the Town of Wilkie as well.

Holly Ennis, who along with her daughter Talitha Lemaigre set up the first farmers market of the year in Wilkie last weekend, located on 2nd Ave W, between the Reddi Mart and Blue Moon Restaurant, said the idea came about pretty naturally.

“I live in Prince Albert and my daughter lives in Wilkie, so she goes to North Battleford to the Farmers Market there on a regular basis, as well as Biggar,” Ennis said.

“We were just kind of talking that it would be nice if there was one in Wilkie because there’s a lot of people and a lot of small towns not far from Wilkie that probably are crafters, or have fresh produce, so we thought why don’t we start giving it a try and see how it turns out.”

So that’s exactly what they did.

Last weekend the pair organized the first-ever Wilkie and District Farmer’s Market, over the long weekend, with an early indicator of success being the sales of radishes harvested by the nearby Hutterite community in Scott, SK.

“They sold great! We almost sold all of them, so that was great to see,” she said.

In addition to Ennis and her daughter, there were three other vendors for the initial market last Sunday, with another two or three at least expected to join those returning this weekend, as the word begins to spread.

Ennis said the idea is to offer the Farmers Market on a regular weekly basis until September, with the potential to do something similar as a ‘Christmas Fair’ during the winter should the event catch on.

Sunday’s Farmer’s Market (July 9) will be open from 2-6 p.m.

There are still openings for those interested to become part of the farmer’s market as a vendor. For more information or to register, contact Holly at (306) 604-0153 or message the Wilkie & District Farmers Market Facebook page.
