Historical walking tour planned for Battlefords area

The Saskatchewan History and Folklore Society (SHFS) is planning to offer a 10-day walking tour to see many important historical sites in the Battlefords and surrounding area.

Hugh Henry, event organizer and president of the non-profit organization, said the walk will hopefully interest those who enjoy exploring and learning about local history.

“This will be the fifth one we’ve sponsored and initiated on a different historic trail in different parts of the province,” he said. “It will be a 10-day walk, starting at the Kramer Campground. We’ll be stopping at communities along the way, and engaging with them.”

There is no cost to participate in the event.

Henry said locally the Battlefords North West Historical Society plans to partner with SHFS for the first couple of days – on the night before the walk starts and the evening after the first day of walking.

The event will run from Aug. 9 to 18 , starting at Fort Battleford in the Town of Battleford, and ending at Fort Pitt in Frenchman Butte.

The walk will cover about 20 km per day, for a total of about 190 km.

The journey includes stops at the Bresaylor Heritage Museum, located between Paynton and Delmas, Poundmaker Museum and Gallery, and historic Shiloh Baptist Church, near Maidstone – the settlement area for Saskatchewan’s first African-Canadian community.

“We do have people come out every time we sponsor one of these,” Henry said. “They are veteran walkers. But it’s advertised as come and go. It’s not meant for people who are totally in shape and used to walking every day. It’s meant to engage more with local history and local folks. So, people are invited to come out and even stay for half a day or a few kilometres to get a feel of it.”

He noted there will also be support vehicles accompanying the walkers along the route, so people can have a break and hop in a truck to ride along for a while.

“If they feel like walking again, they can just hop out to continue on with the rest of the group. It’s meant to be convenient for people of all ages,” Henry said.

People are encouraged to register in advance to participate in the walk if possible.

Anyone interested in taking part can sign up through the SHFS website.
