The Battlefords North Stars announced Thursday, the club has traded forward Holden Doell to the Blackfalds Bulldogs of the Alberta Junior Hockey League (AJHL) in exchange for the CJHL rights to ’03 forward Ryan Johnson, a player development fee and future considerations.

Head coach and general manager of the Stars, Brayden Klimosko said the deal wasn’t an easy one to make, but came at the forward’s request.

“Obviously it’s not [a move] you like to do, but it’s what he feels is best for his development so obviously we’re just happy to have had Holden for the last two years and wish him nothing but the best,” Klimosko said.

Johnson, who the Stars acquired the CJHL rights to, spent last season with the New Mexico Ice Wolves of the North American Hockey League, where he scored 33 points (19 goals, 14 assists) in 55 games. He had 29 points (17 goals, 12 assists) in 49 games with Blackfalds in ’21-22.

Doell finished last season second in Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League scoring, with 100 points (33 goals, 67 assists) in 49 games on his way to being named a finalist for both SJHL MVP and Player of the Year.

In the playoffs, the Martensville product added another 20 points (five goals, 15 assists) in 13 games to finish second in postseason scoring on the Stars’ run to the Canterra Seeds Cup as SJHL champions. He also had another eight points (two goals, six assists) in six games at the Centennial Cup, to lead the Stars and finish tied for third overall in scoring at the national tournament.

In 90 career games with the North Stars, Doell scored 135 points (43 goals, 92 assists).
