The Melfort and District Museum is bringing in a special collection of artifacts from a northeast archaeologist.

A presentation on Aug. 1 will feature the work of late amateur archaeologist Victor Vigrass.

Gailmarie Anderson, curator at the Melfort and District Museum told northeastNOW that this collection is special due to how close the site is to Melfort.

“Because we are so close to his sites where he collected in the Pathlow area, they have graciously allowed the sampling to be housed at our Museum in our Indigenous Peoples and Archaeology Building.”

Vigrass was a longtime resident of Pathlow, SK raising seven children with his wife while running a farm.

Although he initially found his first arrowhead in his twenties, his collection started to grow after retiring in 1962.

The collection featured many items including bone artifacts, household tools, poetry and much more. In total, it has over 4000 pieces and is currently housed at the Royal Saskatchewan Museum in Regina.

Meanwhile, the Melfort and District Museum is hosting a celebration with representatives from the Saskatchewan Archaeology Society. Gabe Lamarche will demonstrate flintknapping as well.

The event begins at 1:00 p.m. and will feature remarks from the Royal Saskatchewan Museum, the City of Melfort, and the Melfort and District Museum.

Relatives of Vigrass will also be in attendance at the event.

Following the program, attendees are invited to tour the archaeological exhibits and other buildings on the site.
