New skatepark ramping up excitement

There’s another option in town when kids claim ‘there is nothing to do’ on summer break.

A new skatepark in Meadow Lake’s Lions Park is already attracting lots of visitors.

It’s located between Diamond 4 and the track/football field and was constructed by the Canadian Ramp Company. A press release from the city said the new park is designed for all ages and abilities and features many street-style elements including multiple ramps, quarter pipe, and rails.

“Engaging outdoor facilities like skateparks have become quite important in recent times as places to interact and build vital social and interpersonal skills. Wherever there is a skatepark, a community develops around it. These types of communities can help kids who are struggling to identify with team sports a valuable sense of belonging. Every time I drive by the park there are people using it – that’s really great to see,” said recreation manager for the city, Regan Beck.

The project was funded by the Canada Community Revitalization Fund (CCRF) through Prairies Economic Development Canada (PrairiesCan).

“Our government’s investments through the Canada Community Revitalization Fund helped transform public spaces and add new activities to welcome residents and visitors,” said the Minister for PrairiesCan, Dan Vandal. “We are proud to have helped the community of Meadow Lake construct a skate park for people of all ages to enjoy this new facility.”

The CCRF contribution of $262,500 represented 75 per cent of the overall estimated project cost of $350,000. The city covered $87,500 and said some major donations received from Tolko Industries ($40,000) and NorSask Forest Products ($5,000) really helped get the project going.

In the press release, Tolko’s Sherri Roger said, “It is very important to Tolko Industries to support our community and especially the youth of our community. We are very pleased that we were able to make this significant contribution to the skatepark to help in making the park a reality for the youth of Meadow Lake.”

A grand opening event at the park, including free summer treats, has been scheduled for Thursday, Aug. 10 starting at 11 a.m. at the skatepark. Participants are asked to wear safety gear when using the facility.
