Everyone is welcome to register for the 29th annual Eagle Point Classic hosted by the Pimiskatan Canoe Club.

Registration will occur Aug. 26 at 9 a.m. at the Eagle Point boathouse with the 18-kilometer race scheduled to start at 10 a.m., followed by the seven-km race at 11 a.m. The 18-km race goes through Downton Lake to Nut Portage and then back via McGibbon Bay (three portages), while the seven-km race goes down McGibbon Bay, around a small islet and back with no portages.

The total purse for the race is about $1,000 with the majority of the amount being awarded in the 18-km race. First place is $300, second place is $200 and third is $100.

The fastest mixed and female teams will also each receive $100.

“We get local people, but we always get five or six paddlers from Saskatoon,” race organizer Sid Robinson said, noting he expects approximately 15 canoes, in total, will compete.

“They are pretty good about coming up and they are competitive. They have really good paddlers down there, pretty well world-class some of them. Prince Albert will send up a couple. They are not quite as competitive as the Saskatoon people, but we invited everybody. Everybody is welcome.”

The Eagle Point Classic marks the largest event of the year for the canoe club. There are between 40 to 50 members and some get together every Wednesday for a race night. The club is located and has storage at Eagle Point.

Robinson also mentioned local residents are welcome to watch the start of the races or the end. He added the first canoes should start arriving back around noon.

“The canoe club has enough canoes that if someone wants to paddle and they have the experience but they need a canoe, we will have a canoe for them,” he said. “I’m sure of that. We should have enough extras and they are welcome to use them.”
