Meadow Lake skatepark offers active outlet for youth

The City of Meadow Lake recently held its grand opening for the new skatepark at Lions Park.

A sort of ‘two-tiered’ grand opening, as parks and rec director with the city, Regan Beck put it. Last Thursday featured speeches and official grand opening ceremonies with dignitaries and sponsors present, though due to the rain, they then held a sort of second part Monday.

Somewhere between 30 to 40 kids came out to experience the skatepark with everything from bikes and rollerblades, to scooters, and skateboards.

Beck said the reception has been exactly what they were hoping for with the project.

“The kids were so excited for it, day or night you drive by there and you’re going to see people using it and enjoying it,” he said. “That’s what we’re looking for, so it’s been a great addition to the community, and we couldn’t be more excited with how everything turned out.”

Beck said the idea for the skatepark first began about two years ago, when a group of residents came together to form the Meadow Lake action park committee, to pitch the idea.

“They were really interested in getting something like this going, so we sat down to have a meeting to kind of get things going,” he said, adding that at that point it just came down to finding a way to finance the project, a challenge made possible through both community and government support.

“We were really fortunate Tolko Industries reached out and became our major donor which really kickstarted the project, and then we received a grant through PrairiesCan (Prairies Economic Development Canada) that allowed us to close the gap. From there, it was all systems go,” he said.

The skatepark is located in Lions Park next to the football field and one of the ball diamonds.
