Author Miriam Körner’s latest book Fox and Bear has been shortlisted for the Marilyn Baillie Picture Book Award.

That’s according to a media released issued Tuesday by the Canadian Children’s Book Centre (CCBC), which announced the finalists for seven major awards celebrating Canadian books for young people.

The Marilyn Baillie Picture Book Award comes with a $20,000 prize. Other books nominated for the award are Boobies by Nancy Vo, I’m Not Sydney by Louise Gay, Lizzy and the Cloud by the Fan Brothers, and Mina by Matthew Forsythe.

“Congratulations to all of the finalists for the 2023 CCBC Book Awards,” stated Urve Tamberg, the President of the CCBC’s board of directors.

“This year’s shortlisted titles celebrate outstanding contributions to Canadian children’s literature. Compelling and groundbreaking, these books illuminate the diverse experiences young people experience today from coast to coast. This year’s books are both relevant and inspiring, yet also brimming with wonder and delight. Most importantly, they are narratives that will resonate with young readers and challenge them to see the world from a different perspective.”

Fox and Bear was released in November 2022 and it’s a story revolving around a fox and a bear who live together in the woods. The two live happily until Fox decides to make life more productive and efficient. When Fox’s inventions set off events that complicate life in unexpected ways, Bear is faced with a difficult decision.

The illustrations in the book are made from recycled or reused paper Körner collected. Fox and Bear can be purchased at Robertson Trading Ltd. in La Ronge, online and at independent book stores.

The winners of the awards will be announced at a ceremony in Toronto on Oct. 23. Overall, $112,500 in prize money will be awarded.
