Northlands College has announced the launch of a Radiation and Environmental Monitoring Technician Program in Buffalo Narrows.

The new program is designed to provide skill sets and employment opportunities, as well as foster career growth and address the need for experts in radiation and environmental safety.

“Northlands College is committed to empowering and uplifting the skill set of northern learners,” President and CEO Karsten Henriksen said in a media release issued this week.

“Our new Radiation and Environmental Monitoring Technician Program provides a new innovative educational route for northerners to enhance their skill set as the economy of northern Saskatchewan evolves in the future. This program equips learners with the technical capabilities required to excel in these critical roles, fostering personal and regional growth.”

Radiation monitoring technicians play a vital role in safeguarding the health and safety of workers and the environment by monitoring, evaluating and ensuring compliance with the radiation safety regulations. On the other hand, environmental monitoring technicians oversee and assess the impact of industrial and mining activities on the environment to ensure adherence to government and monitoring agencies.

Both roles are crucial in maintaining the well-being of communities and ecosystems in the region, the release states.

“We recognize the importance of offering new and relevant educational opportunities to learners in the North,” Richard Farden, the director of technology and trades, said.

“This program not only creates exciting career prospects but also contributes to the safety and sustainability of our environment. Northlands College is proud to lead the way in bringing such programming to our communities, demonstrating our commitment to the development of the North.”
