Northeast recently residents gathered to raise awareness and funds for childhood cancer patients in Saskatchewan.

On Sept. 21, multiple people gathered in Melfort to walk from Pederson’s Family Pharmacy up and down Main Street to help raise funds for the charity Believe in the Gold. This is a non-profit that helps childhood cancer patients’ families with expenses while they are getting life-saving treatments.

Organizer Mavis Durell told northeastNOW that this event hits close to home.

“My granddaughter Zarah had leukemia when she was 15 months old. The charity helped my family immensely at that time. She is now thriving. So miracles do happen and I just like to give back.”

Zarah is now eight years old and is in grade three. Durell said that thankfully she has limited memories of the events but the rest of the immediate family has forever been touched by the illness.

Durell works at the Prairie North Co-op and said that the organization has been helping her efforts to raise money wherever they can.

“They have backed me 100 per cent. They donated everything for a barbecue. We raised a little over $800 from that.”

In total between donations from the walk and other fundraising efforts, they have raised nearly $8,000.

They are hoping to hold their third annual Christmas raffle in November to raise additional funds. They plan on donating that money to help families who need an extra boost around the holidays.
