Ice Wolves ready for busy weekend after blockbuster trade

Oct 6, 2023 | 3:00 PM

Just one day after making a blockbuster trade, the La Ronge Ice Wolves are going full-steam ahead this weekend with two big matchups.

The team is coming off a 4-2 win over Yorkton on Wednesday and take on the Melville Millionaires on Friday night.

Defenseman and La Ronge local Parker Layton said the team is looking forward to the weekend games.

“We almost blew the tire there and lost there in Yorkton, but the boys came through and pulled out the win so we’re hoping to do that again tonight.”

The Ice Wolves will have some new faces in the lineup on Friday after the team completed a massive trade with the Flin Flon Bombers on Thursday. They sent veteran defenseman Adam McNutt to the Bombers in exchange for two forwards, a defenseman, a player development fee, and a 2024 third-round draft pick.

Layton hopes that the new additions will provide a much-needed boost for the club.

“Two wins on the season, guys are trying to prove themselves still,” he said. “I think if you get some new faces in, maybe there’s a new spark. We got the win the other night there and maybe these guys can come in and keep the train rolling.”

The Ice Wolves currently sit with a 2-4 record this season. Mason Bueckert leads the SJHL in scoring with 13 points while Rookie William Forsberg is tied for third with seven points.

Last year, the club finished third in the Sherwood Division with 69 points. Unfortunately, they were eliminated in six games by the Melfort Mustangs.

Layton is hopeful this season will be different.

“Every year is a building block to another year’s success so we’re hoping to get through that this year. I think the ball is going to start rolling here pretty good for us.”

The Ice Wolves take on the Millionaires in Melville with puck drop at 7 p.m.
