Community gets the chance to meet new faces of the Humboldt Broncos

Humboldt Broncos fans have a lot to be thankful for these first few weeks of hockey action.

Following a 7-1 win at the Elgar Petersen Arena on Thanksgiving Sunday, the ice surface was covered in green and gold as fans had an early chance to skate with the Broncos.

While traditionally held in February for Family Day weekend, head coach Scott Barney told northeastNOW this was a chance for fans to meet the new players up close since they are the team with the least amount of returning players.

“It’s important for the kids and the fans and the community. Everybody gives back to us and it’s good to get our faces out there and it was good this year we can get it done earlier.”

From the Broncos leadership, Barney said they are hearing how well the new players are fitting in. With only eight familiar faces around the dressing room, having a team that is meshing on and off the ice is important as well.

Two new faces that have already started making a name for themselves have been forward Marik Mamic and defenseman Connor Thue.

Coming all the way from Manhattan Beach, Cali., Thue knew nothing about the Humboldt Broncos before committing to the green and gold back in May and didn’t know what to expect. Now, he has seen first-hand how awesome the community is, he told northeastNOW.

“I just love how much the community surrounds the team and supports us. It feels great.”

Out of the team’s seven goals on Sunday, Thue scored two, his first of the season after adding five assists during the Hounds’ home opener and the Oct. 3 win at home against La Ronge.

Getting those out of the way has been a great feeling, he said.

Mamic split his AAA year between the Cariboo Cougars and the BCHL West Kelowna Warriors before committing to the Broncos back in May. The Quesnel, B.C. product told northeastNOW that he couldn’t have felt more welcome to Humboldt from his hometown of Quesnel, B.C. where he

“It’s probably one of the best small-town communities around. The guys are welcoming. The fans are welcoming, just can’t ask for more.”

Starting out strong with back-to-back goals during the Bronco’s first home and home against the Hounds and three assists to his name, Mamic couldn’t ask for anything more to start off his career as a Bronco.

With only four games but four dominating wins under their belts, the Broncos have some heavy weeks coming up here on the schedule. Barney said the best thing the Broncos can do is stay humble.

“There’s always a difference between competence and cocky, and obviously you have some good tests here that this coming week.”

Especially with players from B.C., Ontario, and Quebec, as well as a total of three Americans on the roster this year, Barney hopes players took the opportunity to call home and speak with their families as they spent Thanksgiving weekend playing hockey.
