Hawks host Ice Wolves on free admission night

Oct 17, 2023 | 12:00 PM

The Nipawin Hawks are back on home ice Tuesday for a showdown with the La Ronge Ice Wolves.

This is the second of six meetings between the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) clubs, La Ronge won the first game of the year 3-2 in a shootout back on Sept. 23 at the Mel Hegland Uniplex.

Coming off a 3-2 overtime win over Humboldt Saturday, Hawks Head Coach Tad Kozun said his team needs to continue their progress versus the Ice Wolves.

“We must continue to build the momentum from the weekend and continue to show this is the Hawks team we knew we could be,” he said.

Nipawin sits seventh in the SJHL standings after eight games, sitting with a record of 4-3-0-1, the Ice Wolves have struggle of late and sit in 11th place. La Ronge has also given up 55 goals this season, second most in the league. Despite those numbers, Kozun said the Hawks can’t take the Ice Wolves for granted.

“You have to make sure you are ready to compete,” Kozun said. “If you take them lightly then usually it ends up as a bad night for you. We have to make sure we keep our focus and just worry about what we are going to do instead of their past results because we know in this league things can change every day.”

The Hawks are offering free admission to the game, faceoff is 7 p.m. at the Centennial Arena.

Buckberger named Player of the Week

On Monday the SJHL announced their weekly award winners.

Nipawin forward Braxton Buckberger was named the Player of the Week thanks to the 20-year-old Saskatoon product’s one goal and three assists on the weekend against the Broncos.

The third year Hawks forward has four goals and nine assists this year to lead the team.
