“I know that there are still some sectors like hospitality and restaurants that are having issues but for the most part many of the businesses would tell you that things are coming along really well,” said Machniak. “I know some businesses still face challenges like supply chain and staffing but overall, the mood is pretty positive.”

Machniak also noted that the issue of finding staff has been one of the biggest hurdles for area businesses, however, Saskatchewan is not the only province facing a labour force dilemma.

“We (Saskatchewan) are not the only ones having staffing problems,” she said. “I just got back from Calgary after attending the Canadian Chamber of Commerce Annual General Meeting (AGM) and Convention and everyone from every part of the country is in dire need of people.”

According to the BDC, a new study finds that the number of businesses having difficulties hiring or retaining employees has increased since 2018 with “over 60 percent of entrepreneurs having difficulties hiring compared to just over 40 percent five years ago.”

Machniak admits that many employers will have to be creative with how they attract potential candidates.

“I think employers really have to look at the whole package that they are offering a new hire, because let’s face it, it’s not just about wages,” Machniak explained. “Employers who offer benefits packages, better work flexibility, or any number of incentives that will help support bringing the new team member on (will succeed).”

For almost 30 years, the Battlefords & District Chamber of Commerce has been the voice of both large and small businesses representing close to 325 members in the community. She added that a strong Chamber of Commerce is made possible by its membership.

“The Battleford & District Chamber has a very strong and active membership,” she added. “I’m proud to be a part of this organization and watch it grow in the years to come.”
