Northern Lights School Division looking to hire professional recruiter

Oct 19, 2023 | 1:57 PM

The Northern Lights School Division (NLSD) is seeking to hire a professional recruiter in a bid to alleviate a longstanding teacher shortage.

“The idea came about through conversations that we had by our staff, senior management and by the board,” said NLSD director of education Jason Young.

“We scanned our environment …to see what others were doing that was effective. We seen one in terms of the profession recruiter concept that came from another division that’s similar to ours and so, based on their experience, we thought we could give that a go. I just think in light of this teacher shortage, we can’t stay complacent, we need to be responsive and aggressive in our effort to try and recruit teachers, and this is part of our strategy.”

The recruiter will be responsible for several initiatives like showcasing the school division through its vision, mission, and values; liaise with other agencies, divisions, and departments to build and manage relationships with key stakeholder groups; and attend and present at job fairs, along with host open-house events promoting the division at universities, colleges and other post-secondary institutions.

They will also work in collaboration with human resources, maintain and implement the school division recruitment and retention plan, demonstrate a commitment to respecting First Nations and Métis territory, history, ways of knowing, culture and language, truth and reconciliation, and understand the strengths students bring to the school division.

“It’s an opportunity for the professional recruiter to get out there and promote our communities,” Young explained.

“Promote that they are beautiful places to live and beautiful places to work. We just want to make sure that message gets out there and share that message with others in hopes they want to join us and the good work that we do to serve the North.”

Young mentioned the school division is currently short 17 teachers, which continues a trend observed last academic year. He noted NLSD will also continue long-term strategies such as training northern residents to become teachers within a northern context, adding a partnership has been reached with Peter Ballantyne First Nation to deliver a teacher education program in one of its communities.

Those interested in the recruiter position will need to be willing to travel extensively within and outside of the province, as well as hold a degree in education, commerce, or business administration with a human resources focus. The deadline to apply is Oct. 31, 2023.

In 2021-2022, the NLSD employed 270 teachers and had 3,839 students.
