Ice Wolves host Family Weekend in La Ronge

The La Ronge Ice Wolves concluded Family Weekend with one win and one loss.

On Friday, the Ice Wolves lost 5-4 in a shootout against the Melfort Mustangs at La Ronge’s Mel Hegland Uniplex. Three of the Ice Wolves’ goals scored by Mason Bueckert, Liam McInnis, and Rylan Silzer came during a powerplay, while the team’s fourth goal came during the third period by Parker Layton.

“It was back and forth. Unfortunately, we lost in the shootout,” head coach Kevin Kaminski said.

“I think we played a really good 40 minutes. We’ve got to prepare ourselves mentally and physically to have way better starts, which we did on Sunday. It was a good game against a very good Melfort team. They are one of the top teams in the league and the guys kept grinding, scratching, and clawing to tie it up.”

The Ice Wolves then hosted the Kindersley Klippers on Sunday where the team won 4-2. Goals for the Ice Wolves came from Jacob Cossette, Jaxson Hufty, Liam McInnis, and William Forsberg.

“That was probably our best 60 minutes of the year. I think we outshot them 49 to 30. Their goalie played really well. He kept them in the game,” Kaminski said.

“We couldn’t bury them. They kept it close. We had pride in the little things, we had unbelievable energy, unbelievable work ethic, sacrifice and we found a way to win instead of finding a way to lose.”

The weekend also featured the Ice Wolves Sportsman’s Dinner fundraiser on Saturday featuring special guest speaker André Roy, a former NHLer and Stanley Cup champion. Roy played 12 seasons with the NHL starting with the Boston Bruins for one season in 1995. He joined the Ottawa Senators in 1999 and remained with that team for three years, before playing with Tampa Bay Lightning between 2001 and 2004, and again from 2006 to 2008.

Roy also played with the Pittsburgh Penguins for two seasons (2005 to 2007) and he finished his career in the 2008-2009 season with the Calgary Flames. He was on the Tampa Bay roster when the team won the Stanley Cup in 2004.

“I’ve known André for a little bit now and he is one of the funniest hockey players that I know,” Kaminski said.

“He just had some awesome stories from his days in the minors and NHL. I think everyone I talked to so far thinks he was one the best to ever come through here.”
