A 26-year-old man from Cumberland House is facing a number of charges after allegedly assaulting someone on the Red Earth Cree Nation.

On Tuesday, Carrot River RCMP received a report of a robbery on the First Nation.

It turns out that a man was assaulted, suffering serious injuries before having his vehicle stolen.

Officers eventually found the vehicle on Highway 123 traveling toward Cumberland House.

Police tried to initiate a traffic stop, to no avail. Eventually, a tire deflation device was set up which stopped the vehicle.

The driver ran away on foot but was quickly arrested.

The man, identified as Austin McGillivary, has since been charged with robbery, aggravated assault, theft of a credit card (two counts), flight from a peace officer, resisting/obstructing a peace officer, operation of a conveyance while impaired, and operation of a conveyance while prohibited.

He’s scheduled to appear in a Melfort provincial courtroom on Thursday.
