Hawks acquire 20-year-old from Spruce Grove

The Nipawin Hawks announced Thursday that the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) team has acquired 2003-born forward Artem Hrabovetskyi from the Spruce Grove Saints of the Alberta Junior Hockey League (AJHL).

The 20-year-old old Ukrainian product suited up for two games in the AJHL before being acquired by the Hawks earlier in October. Now that the Hockey Canada paperwork is finalized Associate General Manger Dana Dirks expressed his excitement to add Hrabovetsky.

“Artem is a guy that’s going to inject a lot of skill into our lineup and some bite,” Dirks said.

Hrabovetsky played just a pair of games for the Saints without hitting the scoresheet, but he did have four goals for Ukraine at the World Under-19 Division B Hockey Championships.

As for how the Hawks intrigued the forward that they expect to play in their top six forward group is a testament to what General Manager Tad Kozun and the staff are building in the northeast Saskatchewan town.

“Having connections and having agents and other teams enjoy dealing with you and taking notes about what we are trying to do and trying to build. Having people reach out to us with high end players gets a lot of nontertiary” Dirks said.

With the acquisition of Alex Bernauer earlier this week the Hawks are excited about the roster and look to begin an upward trend when the Notre Dame Hounds visit on Oct. 29.

“We’ve brought in the players that we believe give us a real solid chance to win, now it’s up to the guys to put the effort in every night,” Dirks said.

Nipawin is practicing all week with both Bernauer and Hrabovetsky participating, and both will make their Hawks’ debut against the Hounds.

Faceoff is 3 p.m.
