Hawks soar over Hounds

The Nipawin Hawks ousted the Notre Dame Hounds 6-1 Sunday at the Centennial Arena.

Looking for revenge after the Hounds upended Nipawin last Sunday in Wilcox, the Hawks vowed to regain the season series lead at the ‘Cage.’

Newcomer Alex Bernauer scored his first goal as a Hawk in the first period. Chase Visser picked up the game winning goal in the first as well and the home team never looked back. Visser added a pair of assists in the win as well. The 20-year-old Barrhead, Alta. product never used the weekend scheduling as an excuse for Nipawin’s loss last week or the fact the Hounds were playing their third game in three days.

“We had to take it to them, right from the beginning,” Visser said. “We knew we kind of gave them one, it doesn’t matter if it’s the backend of a three-in-three, we have to show up and we didn’t. We had to take it to them today, and we did.”

Notre Dame did push back from the two-goal deficit scoring in the second to cut the lead to 2-1, but the Hawks answered with three unanswered goals in the second period courtesy Joel Mabin, Artem Hrabovetskyi, and Braxton Buckberger. Finley Radloff capped the scoring in the final period. Visser said seeing Bernauer and Hrabovetskyi score in their debuts was fun for the entire team.

“That was awesome. Look at Artem’s first goal, it was nasty. When you go under the triangle, between the legs, far-side and then Bernauer, a two-on-one early in the game. Obviously, they are going to help us a lot. It’s a lot of fun,” he said.

Damon Cunningham had an easier game making 24 saves in the Hawks win, Jesse Pye suffered the loss allowing six on 38 Nipawin chances.

Special teams were heavily in the Hawks favour as well, Nipawin scored three power-play goals on seven chances, Notre Dame had seven as well not scoring on any.

The Hawks will travel to Kindersley Tuesday to meet the Klippers before a home-and-home rematch with Humboldt. Visser said the team needs to start gaining momentum now after an up-and-down start to the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) season.

“That’s the message we’ve been talking about, we win a couple games then we let off. We can’t let off, we have Kindersley on Tuesday, they played a good game against Humboldt Saturday. Then we have Humboldt after that and we know they play well, so we have to bring it every night,” Visser concluded.

Faceoff at the West Central Event Centre is 7:30 p.m., the broadcast of Duplex Furniture and Appliances Hawks Hockey on 750 Beach Radio begins at 7:15 p.m.
