Northlands College has announced that Margaret Rose McIntyre and Ron Ratte are the new Elders-in-Residence.

“These accomplished individuals are set to play a pivotal role in enriching the cultural fabric of the college and fostering deeper connections with Indigenous communities,” a media release issued Thursday stated.

McIntyre is deeply rooted in her Indigenous heritage. She was raised along the Churchill River in the small northern settlement of Dipper Lake and she is a proud member of English River First Nation. Her upbringing was steeped in the strong Denesuline values, and she is fluent in her language, which she considers essential to preserve.

Ratte is a member of the Lac La Ronge Indian Band and he joins Northlands College with a wealth of experience. He previously served as the Manager and Director of Indigenous Initiatives at the college, amassing extensive knowledge and fostering relationships within the fields of justice, policing, and mental health.

“Northlands College is firmly rooted in its commitment to Indigenous initiatives,” said President and CEO Karsten Henriksen.

“We believe that preserving and celebrating the culture and heritage of Indigenous Peoples is not just an obligation, but an honour. It’s at the very core of our fundamental pillars, which include empowering and serving the North. We are proud to welcome both Margaret Rose McIntyre and Ron Ratte as our Elders-in-Residence as we continue to drive our initiatives towards Indigenization. Their invaluable contributions will serve as a beacon guiding our path forward.”

The board of Northlands College said they’re excited to have McIntyre and Ratte join the school.

“It is expected their presence will play an essential role in nurturing a more inclusive and culturally rich environment for learners and the communities the college serves.”
