Hawks host Millionaires in Johnson’s return to the ‘Cage’

The Nipawin Hawks will host the Melville Millionaires Tuesday in the lone Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) game.

The Hawks are mired in a three-game losing streak and have lost five of their last six games. The Hawks were swept by the Broncos this past weekend. Despite two solid efforts on the weekend versus Humboldt the club still needs to turn tight games into victories according to their Head Coach Tad Kozun.

“I thought we took good steps on Saturday where a couple mistakes led to a loss in that game, but I liked the effort. As we talked about, I liked the effort in the final couple minutes, but we still need to find a way to win,” Kozun said.

Nipawin is currently sitting in eighth place in the SJHL standings, the Millionaires are in fifth and leading their division for the first time in a decade. Kozun said the Centennial Arena has always been a tough place for teams to visit, but this year the Hawks have lost more than they have won at home. Kozun said that needs to change starting Tuesday.

“We need to better on home ice as well, you look at our records now we have almost been better on the road. We’ve got to find a way on home ice to be able to use the crowd to our advantage and make sure we’re ready to go,” he added.

The Hawks have had lots of success against Melville in recent years winning all six games last year and 12 of the last 14 games between the two in the last five years, but the Millionaires have changed their fortunes much to the credit of longtime Hawks Head Coach and General Manager Doug Johnson. The former bench boss of Nipawin for almost a dozen years will return to Nipawin for the first time as the visitor. He coached Kozun while he played and had a successful year last year with the OCN Blizzard in the Manitoba Junior Hockey League (MJHL). Kozun said Melville is much better coached and the Hawks will need to be well prepared.

“We know a lot of their tenancies, most of our 20-year-olds played under that system. [Alex] Bernauer played under it last year, I played under it as a player and a coach. We’ve done our homework and I expect us to be ready tonight,” Kozun concluded.

Faceoff is 7 p.m.
