New banners recognize service of local veterans

Nineteen banners have been installed in La Ronge recognizing the service and sacrifices of local veterans.

“There’s probably going to be at least 20 or 30 more,” said Teron Roberts, who organized the initiative alongside Chuck Mackinnon.

“Some of the information I found online like the World War One vets because it all available and some of the World War Two stuff I already knew from local people and the past. Right now, I am gathering information and I am trying to call out to people to send me information and pictures and stuff like that.”

The 30-inch by 60-inch banners, which town council gave permission to install in August, are located along La Ronge Avenue and Patterson Park. Each banner includes a photo of a local veteran, their name, the conflict they served in, as well as the years of their births and deaths.

While the initial three banners were put up about a month ago, the remainder were installed Sunday with the help of Therron Roberts and Josh McAuley. La Ronge Mayor Joe Hordyski offered the use of his personal lift free of charge.

“I tried to focus on the local La Ronge band ones first because there is nothing known about them,” Roberts said.

“There was nothing written or nothing anywhere. The only one I have ever seen is at Little Red River. They have a memorial monument in front of the band office.”

The banners will be installed every year before Remembrance Day and taken down when the Christmas lights go up. When they are not in use, the banners will be stored at La Ronge’s Royal Canadian Legion Branch 371.

The cost of the project cost $6,500, of which $5,000 was paid through a donation by the Lac La Ronge Indian Band Internal Council. Roberts noted he will likely launch a GoFundMe soon to pay the remainder of the bill, as well as go towards funding the other banners that will go up in the future.

Those who would like to make a donation or know of a veteran that should be recognized are encouraged to reach out to Roberts.
