Melfort residents honour Remembrance Day with service at MUCC

Nov 11, 2023 | 5:08 PM

Residents in Melfort gathered inside the auditorium at the Melfort & Unit Comprehensive Collegiate (MUCC) on Saturday morning to partake in honouring Remembrance Day in the community.

Members of the Legion, RCMP, and 171 Melfort Phoenix Air Squadron were in attendance along with a number of youth organizations. The ceremony began with the marching in of the colours and parade followed by the singing of O’ Canada. The ceremony included the playing of The Last Post, God Save the King, and two minutes of silence.

President of the Royal Canadian Legion Melfort No. 30 Jim Graham told northeastNOW why the day is so important.

“It’s very significant to us because it gives us a focal point every year to turn around and look back and say are we really focused directly enough on supporting veterans – and remembering too,” he said. “A lot of it is about education. We went to four schools this week talking about remembrance and talking about what veterans are and it’s us trying to educate them, but it’s them kind of asking us questions that sometimes wake us up to things we don’t think about. It’s amazing what comes out of the minds of the young.”

He added that the Legion has been collecting money for its Poppy Fund since the last Friday in October, something that supports Veterans in the community.

“We help support places to live for them and give them some living expenses and try and help them secure employment and just try to get them back on their feet. And another case, we have veterans who have fairly significant emotional problems. We’ve introduced the Paws for Veterans Program where we procure, train, and provide service dogs to veterans who have emotional difficulties just to help them gain some confidence and kind of stabilize their lives.”

The ceremony ended with the March off the Colours and Parade.
