New BORA trail opens to the public

Members of the Boreal Outdoor Recreation Association (BORA) are excited to announce the opening of a new 1.8-kilometre trail.

The trail is called Pisiw (lynx in Cree) and is located between McKenzie Point and the former Quarry Trailer Park. It is located in a section of the forest that didn’t have enough usage to previously justify a lot of development.

“It was an area we had looked at previously and we had started to do some work on it a few years ago,” said BORA member Matt Preston.

“With the increased popularity of the trails, generally speaking, and some of the events and stuff that have gone on in the trails has really helped to introduce people to some of the lesser-used areas. We have seen a lot more usership in that section, so we thought it was the right time to push it through and to finalize it.”

The work done so far on the Pisiw Trail included the removal of trees and saplings. A skid steer was also used to clear a bit of the top layer of the ground. If the weather permits and there isn’t a large snowfall in the coming weeks, Preston plans to remove more moss from it so there’s more of a firm surface.

“It’s a beautiful trail,” he said. “Most of the trails are just in the forest and the nice thing about this trail is it does run in the forest for one section, but then on the far side of it, it runs over a cliff that overlooks the muskeg, so I think that’s a nice feature to this trail that I think a lot of people will enjoy.”

As part of the opening of the trail, BORA has launched a contest seeking original artwork of a lynx to be used as signage and shared on the association’s social media accounts. The artwork should work well on a three-inch by three-inch sign and be displayable on a white background.

The contest is open to all age groups in the Lac La Ronge region with a deadline of Dec. 1 to submit. Submissions can be sent to bora.laronge@gmail.com.

The winner of the contest will receive $300 store credit to the La Ronge General Store. One random entry will also receive $100 credit to the same store. Preston Trail Consulting and Forest Edge Developments donated the prizes.
