People in the Prince Albert area have the opportunity to get their favourite businesses recognized.

Nominations are open for the 2023 Samuel McLeod Business Awards (SMBA). This will be the 33rd time the Prince Albert and District Chamber of Commerce will be giving out these awards to help highlight the work being done by local businesses.

“As an entrepreneur, there are a lot of challenges that you encounter throughout the year. So, it’s great to be able to recognize those who have had success,” said Patty Hughes, the CEO of the Prince Albert and District Chamber of Commerce.

Just like for 2022, there will be 12 categories.

  • Business Transformation
  • Business Leader of the Year
  • Community Involvement
  • Customer Service
  • Diversity in the Workplace
  • Indigenous Business
  • New Venture
  • Marketing
  • Micro-Enterprise of the Year
  • Non-Profit of the Year
  • Young Entrepreneur of the Year
  • Business of the Year

It’s safe to say the most prestigious is ‘Business of the Year.’ Past winners include Willow Grove Pharmacy, Pet Planet, Lakeland Ford, Northern Lights Casino, and Lake Country Co-op.

Hughes added each award is special and nominated business owners should be excited.

“Just to be recognized as a finalist is an achievement itself,” she said.

Nominations are open until Jan. 2, 2024. Hughes is hoping to see a big number of nominations as she knows just a little bit of recognition can go along way.

“It’s another way to highlight this business, get people saying, ‘Who are they, I didn’t know them.’”

The awards will be given out on April 12, 2024.
