Third annual Melfort Christmas Village back and continuing to grow

Nov 30, 2023 | 6:00 PM

The Melfort Christmas Village is returning for its third annual go-round, as the site continues to progress a little bit each year.

According to the Melfort and District Museum (which puts on the event every year), there will be more lights, more decorated buildings, and different themes/activities for the visitors.

“This year’s theme in the center of the village of the museum grounds is an enchanted forest,” the museum explained. “We will also have a Santa Claus for people to visit and you’ll be able to sing Christmas carols in the school.”

The Christmas village opens Friday (Dec. 1) and runs until Dec. 22. Days to visit include Wednesdays through Saturdays from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., with Wednesday having the drive-thru option for those unable to walk.

Decorating for the village began back in September for the museum, as it’s their biggest fundraiser of the year.

Admission is by donation with proceeds going directly back to the museum to support their future expansion.

“We are expanding our grounds towards the west of us behind the Four Seasons arena over at the ag society,” they added. “We plan to add several new buildings to our expansion, which will give us a few more opportunities to display our artifacts in the proper setting.”

Ideas for new buildings include a bank, a jail, a newspaper office, a stable, and a telephone office.

During the first year of the Christmas Village, roughly 1,000 people attended, as it also featured the Christmas Castle, due to COVID.

Meanwhile, last year only saw about 600 people, but temperatures were extremely cold throughout the month, which likely turned some away.

“The weather was a little bit to our detriment because our temperatures were so cold at that time, so we’re looking forward to this year because we have better temperatures right now we think and we’re hoping this year is just as successful as our very first year,” the museum told northeastNOW.

“We’re very excited, we’ve worked very hard in preparing this, so we sure hope that the people from Melfort and the surrounding area come out and enjoy our labours of putting it together.”

Roughly 24 buildings will be on display and decorated as part of the village, as well as Christmas music playing in the background and hot apple cider available to drink around a bonfire.

New this year includes a caboose, dentist office, Chinese cafe, Canada cafe, and real estate building.
