Hawks move Mabin to Melville

The Nipawin Hawks have sent 20-year-old forward Joel Mabin to the Melville Millionaires for a player development fee.

The Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) club made the move Monday after they added 2003-born defenceman Liam McInnis on Saturday, as the acquisition of the Regina, Sask. product put Nipawin at nine 20-year-old players, the league limit is eight per game.

General Manager Tad Kozun said with the addition of McInnis the staff had a tough decision to make sending their longest tenured player to the Millionaires to reunite with former Hawks’ coach Doug Johnson.

“It’s always tough with that conversation,” Kozun said. “Joel wore letter for us last year, he is wearing one this year, he’s a great kid. I can’t say enough good things about him.”

Mabin was recruited to Nipawin out of Lethbridge by then Hawks’ bench boss Johnson. Mabin went on to play 136 games in the Hawks’ jersey over the last three seasons. Mabin scored 31 goals, had 79 points and added 268 penalty minutes in his SJHL career.

Nipawin has had eight days off between games and now has five left before the Christmas break. Kozun said once the break hit and the Hawks were sitting at 13 wins and the same amount of losses, he needed to make changes.

We weren’t happy being a .500 hockey team,” Kozun said. “We went and got a defenceman, we had to move some guys out. If we have a better record, we might be having a different conversation but the moral of the story, we’re not happy with where we are at.”

The Hawks will host Weyburn Wednesday to start a three-game week, all at home. The Estevan Bruins visit on Friday and Saturday.

All games faceoff at 7 p.m.
