Meadow Lake Humane Society jailbreak sleepover raises over $13,000

Meadow Lake’s Karlee Mazuren has wrapped up her jailbreak sleepover challenge at the Meadow Lake and District Humane Society, raising a total of $13,500.

The event ran three days and two nights. The goal was to raise $5,000, so the tally far exceeded that amount.

Mazuren said she is passionate about the humane society and all the animals in its care, so she wanted to take part in the event again. It’s her fourth year doing the fundraiser.

She slept in one of the dog cages for the cause, with some little puppies sleeping beside her.

Mazuren laughed, saying the hardest part was trying to sleep when the dogs all started barking. She noted once one dog started barking, the others joined in.

Meadow Lake Humane Society is all volunteer-run and operated, so the fundraiser helps fill a need.

“We all pitch in and do what we can, but we can’t be operational unless we get donations,” Mazuren said. “More often than not, we need money… Especially this year we needed money for our vet bills. We’ve been getting a lot of injured animals that require extra vet care.”

She said the shelter has been receiving several dogs with a mange skin infection to treat, adding to its costs.

“We’ve been getting a lot of dogs [needing] amputations, and we’ve been getting some cats in with urinary tract problems. They need different food. They potentially could need surgery. That’s really expensive,” Mazuren said.

Last year the fundraiser helped the humane society’s subsidized spay and neuter program.

In 2021, the humane society used the funds raised to purchase a shelter van to transport animals for vet appointments and from transfers from other communities.

“We’re a holding facility for all the surrounding communities,” Mazuren added. “We get [animals from] La Loche, Turnor, Dillon, and all the villages up North… We’re not just a Meadow Lake operation.”
