On December 6, 1989, a gunman entered the Polytechnique Montréal and killed 14 women.

Now on the 32nd anniversary of the massacre, Meadow Lake is taking action during the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women Day.

“Today is a day of recognition,” said Sheila Mirasty, Waskoosis Safe Shelter manager.

Together with the North West Friendship Centre, the organizations will host a walk tonight to honour the memories of the 14 lives lost that December three decades ago and to recognize the women who have died in the intervening years or are currently struggling.

The walk will begin at the friendship centre, walk around the safe shelter before ending at the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 76 for hot chocolate, Bannock, soup and guests are invited to listen to a presentation.

It’s open to everybody,” she said.

“We’ve posted it on Facebook, and we have posters hanging everywhere and we shared with other organizations.”

The walk will begin at 5 p.m. and people are asked to wear white, red or purple and dress according to weather conditions. White ribbons will be provided as will candles.
