NESD education support workers set to vote on strike mandate
Education support workers for the North East School Division (NESD) are set to vote on whether they support walking off the job down the road.
CUPE 4875’s leadership wants to see if the membership would support a strike mandate. If they do, this will allow the union to call a strike if a deal can’t be met between the two sides.
The mandate is also a bargaining tactic as CUPE can propose hitting the picket line at any time. This is exactly what CUPE 160, which represents outside workers for the City of Prince Albert, is doing after membership approved a strike mandate last month.
The main focus for CUPE 4875 is better wages. According to the union, the average pay per hour for NESD education support workers is $21.42. They say other school divisions in the province offer their employees a higher wage.
