The Tri-Community Dance Club’s Winter Showcase was a chance for members to highlight the skills and abilities they have been learning since September.

The event was held Dec. 3 at La Ronge’s Churchill Community High School and featured a demonstration of ballet, jazz, contemporary styles and hip hop. It included about 90 dancers from the club, as well as a performance from the La Ronge Powwow Dancers accompanied by the Men of the North Drum Group.

Charlene Bosiak and the Ishraq Troupe (Middle Eastern dance) performed as well.

“It is so exciting for them. They work so hard throughout the whole semester,” said dance club chairperson Genevieve Candelora about its members.

“They usually start working on their dance probably about one-and-a-half to two months before they actually get on stage to perform it. There is an awful lot of work that goes into the pieces and they have a say in the songs they choose, and they like to be able to choose which style of dance they want to showcase.”

Candelora explained dancers were excited and thrilled to go on stage, noting some of them, especially the younger dancers, were nervous about doing so. She added some dancers didn’t feel comfortable performing when classes started in September, but slowly became more confident as they got better.

Candelora went on to say the Tri-Community Dance Club has been around for two years and it has really matured during that time. Dancers are as young as three and as old as 14.

“I had a few people mention to me that it sure seems like the club has grown. We have definitely generated a lot of interest,” she said.

The club is also growing to include dancers who will travel to other communities, participate in festivals and be officially adjudicated.

“I think our showcases have set a bit of a precedent just because we always end up with a very packed house, and people are just so generous and supportive of coming to the showcase and supporting the dancers. It’s really amazing,” Candelora said.

Registration for dance classes starting in January is now open and the public can apply online on the Tri-Community Dance Club website. There are a couple of groups that are already full, but most are still open to accepting dancers.
