Bruins double Hawks on Teddy Bear Toss night

Dec 9, 2023 | 12:31 PM

Braeden Jockims is the 2023 Nipawin Hawks Teddy Bear toss goal scorer, but unfortunately there wasn’t much else to celebrate in a 4-2 loss to the Estevan Bruins in Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) action Friday.

Heading into back-to-back showdowns with Estevan coming off two wins and producing a dozen goals, the weekend started well when Jockims gave the Haws the early lead and triggering the fans throwing Teddy Bears onto the ice, a long-standing junior hockey tradition. Following the delay, Estevan tied the game at 1-1.

Nipawin restored their lead in the first period, hometown 18-year-old Finley Radloff scored his 11th goal of the campaign, but the Bruins clawed back again, the teams went to the first intermission tied 2-2.

Estevan took the lead on a shorthanded goal in the second period and capped the scoring with an empty net goal late in the third period. For the Hawks, they again failed to extend a winning streak to three games, a feat that has alleviated the team through 29 games. Captain Maguire Ratzlaff said the team needs to find a way to get on a roll.

“We keep talking about it, but I think just need to go out there and do it,” he said after the game. “We run through every situation, bring up stats, every time we have won two in a row, we just haven’t been able to win the third, we need to figure out a way to get over that hump.”

The Bruins win evened the season series between the two teams at a win apiece, the defeat evened Nipawin’s record at 14 win and 14 losses plus a shootout loss.

“We just have to be hungry; everyone is going to look in the mirror tonight and just wanting to be better,” Ratzlaff added of Friday’s game.

Damon Cunningham suffered the loss in goal, playing great making 38 saves on 41 Bruins’ shots, Nipawin had 29 chances on Jackson Miller.

The rematch will faceoff at 7 p.m., with a different looking group according to their leader.

“I think we just have to start putting the team first, we’re going to have to reflect and come out hard tomorrow,” Ratzlaff concluded.
