Year in review 2023: Major infrastructure projects in Melfort

Dec 27, 2023 | 12:25 PM

Melfort’s mayor is weighing in on the year that was in 2023.

Glenn George told northeastNOW that some significant infrastructure projects were a huge part of the year for the city.

“The main thing was Broadway (Avenue) South, rehabilitation and then painting and curbs,” George said. “We did 11 blocks of new curbs and asphalt roads, 10 blocks of sidewalks, and three kilometres of walking paths.”

Other infrastructure projects finished in 2023 include a roof replacement, a new HVAC unit for the Melfort Public Library, and a new off-leash dog park in the Spruce Haven area.

George said many of those projects were carried over from 2022 and completed this year.

He expects fewer large projects in 2024, with increased costs and inflation a factor. However, should the city be fortunate to be approved for several grants, that could change.

“We’re still going after a grant for a new library,” George explained. “It seems like it’s coming along, but we haven’t heard for sure yet.”

Melfort is also in the process of decommissioning its landfill, using grants and reserves, but George admitted it will cost a lot to open a new landfill, and the city continues to apply for grants to help reduce the cost.

Another change for the city was using a Cloud-based computer system, moving on from the paper-based system used for so many years.

“That’s taken a lot of time and energy, but in the end it’s going to be a lot better for everything,” George said

He noted increased investment in Melfort and area, including the opening of several businesses such as New Era Ag Technologies, G3 Grain Terminal, H&H Commercial Trade Ltd.’s new feed mill and canola crushing plant, and new stores for Backstage Music and the Prairie North Co-op Food Store.

The municipal election is being held next November, and George told northeastNOW that he has decided on whether he will run for another term as mayor. However, he is keeping his decision to himself for now.
