Year in Review

Town of Tisdale stays fairly status-quo during 2023

As 2023 draws to a close, northeastNOW is taking a look back on the most important and impactful stories of the year, as selected by our reporters and editorial staff.

The Town of Tisdale has had a fairly mellow 2023 when it comes to capital projects, as the focus of this year was maintaining the status quo.

That included continuing with their paving program, waterline replacement projects, and road improvement plans.

“We needed to keep maintaining our capital and keep maintaining the infrastructure that we have and we just kind of went away from any frills and whistles this year,” said Chief Administrative Officer Brad Hvidston.

While that kept the town busy during the summer, recently residents of Tisdale have become interested in neighbourhood watch.

The community discussed the idea in November, in hopes of creating something similar to a citizens on patrol program.

“We’ve just seen a rise in criminal activity going on and we realize that the police can’t be everywhere all the time,” explained co-organizer Roy Skoglund. “If one person, two people, or 10 people all see the same thing going on and they start talking, then that’s just how it starts.”

Although the town hasn’t confirmed any capital projects for the 2024 year, that doesn’t mean that new businesses are sharing in that idea.

A fertilizer distribution centre will soon call Tisdale its home.

Genesis Fertilizers partnered with Invest Tisdale, back in August, and the plan is to create it in the Rural Municipality (RM) of Tisdale Agriculture Industrial Park, just outside of town, next to C-Merak’s operations.

Once about “75,000 tonnes of investors” make the project a reality, construction would hope to begin in the coming spring, as it’s expected to create over 170 jobs and be 100 per cent farmer-owned.

Finally, the municipality also played a major role in a significant sports event to begin the year, when the Recplex played host to the 2023 CURLSASK Men’s and Women’s Senior Curling Provincials.

The hosting gig also likely played a part in getting another curling event to come to town in 2024, with the Provincial Scotties.

Tisdale will host the professional women’s curling event from Jan. 16-21 at the RecPlex.

“Right now everybody’s just looking forward to 2024,” Town of Tisdale Mayor, Al Jellicoe told northeastNOW.

According to Jellicoe, addressing housing issues will be the town’s major concern in 2024, as they hope to come up with a plan on how to create more available and affordable rental units within the community.
