CAA Sask. fields thousands of service requests during extreme cold

While everything seems to slow down in the cold, CAA Saskatchewan has been busy dealing with thousands of calls for help.

Since the extreme cold descended on the province on Thursday, the organization said it’s fielded around 4,000 requests for help with battery boosts, tows, lock outs, and deliveries of fuel and air.

“CAA appreciates the patience and understanding of our Members knowing that wait times for service have increased, and apologizes for the frustration,” CAA Saskatchewan said in a statement on Tuesday.

The extreme cold weather also meant battery service in Regina and Saskatoon had to be cancelled, the organization noted.

The automobile association shared some advice for Saskatchewan drivers hitting the road during the winter months.

“If drivers become stranded, it’s very important to stay in your vehicle as it does provide temporary shelter until help arrives,” CAA advised.

The organization also advised drivers to pack a roadside safety kit that includes a shovel, window scraper, snow brush, booster cables, winter gear, blankets and non-perishable foods.

Packing a cell phone and a charger is also a good idea, CAA said, and maintaining the correct tire pressure is also important for both traction on slippery surfaces and fuel efficiency.

CAA also advised drivers to check their brakes and batteries and top up fluids, while also keeping the fuel tank at least half full in order to reduce the possibility of moisture in the tank.

When it comes to block heaters, CAA said cars should be plugged in at -15 C, and drivers should ensure the cord they’re using isn’t frayed or damaged.

“CAA Saskatchewan would like to remind all motorists to respect all tow operators, and first responders working on our highways and roads, and to give them the space they need to get the work done,” the organization added.

“They are working as best they can in these extremely cold winter conditions. Please remember to slow down move over.”
