The Tisdale Trojans have named their first recipient to their newly minted Wall of Honour.

The club honoured Gary McPeak during their only home game earlier this month, for his achievements, impact, service and leadership.

“Our executive had brought this idea of a Wall of Honour, a while ago, and we thought that it would be a great honour and first choice to have Gary as that person,” Trojans President Dallas Thiessen explained.

“I feel it was probably past time that he was honoured and acknowledged by our club. We’re grateful for his service and I think acknowledging him this way is the right thing to do. He’s had a huge part in our organization and we’re grateful for his devotion to our club.”

McPeak spent 22 years as the team’s general manager, all the way from 1988 to 2010.

During that time, Tisdale won the league championship a total of five times, including becoming national champions in 2002.

“It’s an honour for everyone in a way, it takes a lot of people to make things like that hockey club run and it was just nice to be a part of,” McPeak added. “It was pretty fun in the year we won everything, that was a joy to be involved with, and the kids had something in mind and they didn’t quit until it got it, they all worked hard.”

McPeak also helped secure the Trojans’ original dressing room and its expansion, as well as playing a big part in bringing the team to the community in the first place.

He was humble in his response, as he said it took a lot of people to make sure the game thrived throughout the town.

“I’ve been in hockey a long time and I sort of knew when we started the project that it was going to be tough to get going and, but there were more people than myself that were involved, so I couldn’t take all credit. Some other people stepped up and helped, and really the toughest thing was finding players to make a team,” McPeak told northeastNOW.

“The people that supported us were just great and that’s a big part of being successful. A few times in the first five years or so we didn’t have too good of a win-loss record, but things started going our way once we got more knowledgeable coaching.”

The new Wall of Honour is set to be displayed in the Recplex Lobby beside the Trojan Office.

Thiessen mentioned he was honoured to be the one to present McPeak with the award, as so many throughout the community had nothing but good things to say.

“You can see by the amount of outpour on social media that he’s had a huge impact on a number of people. He’s inspired a number of people across the hockey world and I’m just grateful to have been that person to acknowledge him in that way,” Thiessen said.

“It’s inspiring for somebody to give back to the hockey world like that, especially because he volunteered all of that time. It’s inspiring for me as somebody who’s trying to give back to a game that’s been so great for me, so he’s somebody that you could idolize for sure.”
