Humboldt Golf Club receiving financial boost from city

Jan 24, 2024 | 4:00 PM

The city of Humboldt confirmed their financial support for the Humboldt Golf Club (HGC) at the last council meeting.

The golf club made a presentation to council on Monday about the status of the course as they prepare for the 2024 golf season. The club previously reached out to the city for some financial support, according to City Manager Joe Day.

“Council, back in May of 2023, had already promised $100,000 to the golf club to get them ready for the 2024 season, if they had met certain criteria as far as reporting criteria ” Day explained. “Because they did meet…that reporting criteria, we had already just forwarded them $100,000, so in essence their message to council was just an appreciation of that.”

Day said the HGC also told council they will continue working with the city to find more long-term stability for the golf course. He added the presentation showed that there is a lot of community support for the golf course and that it adds a lot of value to the community.

The city hasn’t normally had to provide financial support for the golf course, and Day said council is struggling to fit it into their budgets and where it ends up on the budget priority list.

“It’s still something we’re working on, the city’s still working on, with the golf club to just trying to understand what is going to be required over the longer term,” Day explained.

Day described the Humboldt Golf Club as a “wonderful attraction” and attracts golfers both locally and provincially. He said it will take some time to diversify operations at the golf club, but believes over time, it will be a self-sufficient operation.

“But there’s just a few years here where probably is going to need some support from outside of its own operations,” Day said.

The city and golf club have established a governance committee to meet and work to resolve any concerns or issues, and to find a model that will keep the course a viable, sustainable operation for years to come.
