On a night that they identified as the Lake Country Cobra Chickens in a nod to the Canada Goose, the Prince Albert Raiders showed the kind of tenacity that’s commonly found in the northern bird.

Trailing the Saskatoon Blades 4-2 heading into the third period, the Raiders rallied to tie the game at 4-4 in the final minute of regulation before eventually outlasting their rivals in a shootout to win 5-4 in front of nearly 3,000 screaming fans at the Art Hauser Centre on Friday night.

“We work hard, our guys don’t give up, I’ve said it a million times,” said Raiders Head Coach Jeff Truitt. “The character has come out again.”

“It was a group effort tonight and the character came through.”

Turner McMillen tied the game late for the Raiders while Krzysztof Macias scored the shootout winner.

With the win the Raiders pick up a massive two points in the standings to keep pace with the Calgary Hitmen for the eighth and final playoff spot in the WHL’s Eastern Conference. Calgary also won on Friday.

The Raiders have now beaten the Blades in each of their last two meetings, both in shootouts and both at the Art Hauser Centre.

The rivalry now shifts back to Saskatoon where the Raiders and Blades will meet again on Saturday.
