Mintos, Bears split weekend series in P.A.

The Prince Albert Mintos collected both a win and a loss during their two-game doubleheader against the Estevan Great North Bears at the Art Hauser Centre this past weekend.

Game 1 took place Saturday night and saw P.A. cruise to a 6-3 victory.

Owen Nelson led the way with a pair of goals and an assist, which pushed him over the 40-point, making him the first Minto to surpass the milestone this season.

Kelan Simmonds also scored twice, while Abinet Klassen and Van Taylor rounded out the goal column. Taite Donkin netted three assists and Owen Dyck, Will Whitter, Konnor Watson, and Carter Cole had one helper each.

Talen Wallis, Evhan Allan, and Jase McNichol were the goal-getters for Estevan in Game 1 as Cameron Allard had two assists and Roan Burgess, Carter Onrait, Riley Craigen, and Thomas Ries all had one assist.

In net for the Green and Gold was Brady Holtvogt who made 26 saves, while on the opposite end, Kaden Perron managed 22 stops for the Bears and was handed the loss.

Sunday’s matchup was a bit of the same, while also being very different.

Game 2 saw Estevan get their revenge by downing the Mintos by the same 6-3 score following a four-goal third period.

Klassen, Raydr Wallington, and Kale Margolis tickled twine for Prince Albert as Donkin managed two assists while Taylor and Cole each had one.

For the Bears, McNichol led the way with a goal and two assists while Burgess, Allan, Ries, and Wallis all potted one of each. Chase Holt also tacked on a goal in the contest as Onrait and Taye Shukin scored the other assists.

Josh Henry was in net for the second game, making 22 saves to collect the loss as the Mintos are now 19-11-4 on the campaign.

Meanwhile, Perron was back in goal for Estevan and stopped 31 where the Bears now hold a 17-16-5 record this season.

The weekend series wrapped up the January portion of the schedule for Prince Albert as they now look to February. The Mintos return to action on Thursday the first when they welcome the Notre Dame Hounds to the Art Hauser Centre for a 7 p.m. puck drop.
