Preparations are in the works for the upcoming 2023 Lac La Ronge Winter Festival.

That’s according to Jonas Roberts Memorial Community Centre (JRMCC) director of sports and recreation Kevin Roberts, who said the total payout for all events is about $40,000. The festival begins March 1 and runs until March 10.

“As far as we are doing the agenda, it remains the same as the previous year,” he said.

“We had some good feedback and participation in the events last year. Our coordinators are all back as well. We’re essentially running the same events we did last year.”

Events include various tournaments or competitions in broomball, cribbage jigging and square dancing, hockey, Texas Hold’em and volleyball and more.

The Tracker Tom Charles Memorial Junior King and Queen Trapper Competition is scheduled for March 2, while the King and Queen Trapper Competition for adults will be held March 9 and 10. The total payout for the adult trapper competition is about $11,000.

Other events include the Northern Talent Showcase and the Festival Queen Crowning, which will both occur March 2. The 15th annual Moochacheech Memorial Jackfish Derby will take place March 3 on Bigstone Lake, and there will be a fundraising cabaret at the JRMCC on March 9.

“It brings the community together,” Roberts said of the festival.

“We have a good core of event coordinators who come back year after year. There is still a demand for activities to be hosted within the community. Sometimes our events bring in good crowds and people like to gather and watch various activities that go on.”

Roberts recommends checking in on the JRMCC Facebook page for more details about individual events.
