Driest January on record for La Ronge

Feb 2, 2024 | 2:05 PM

La Ronge experienced the driest January out of 59 years of record keeping.

That’s according to data from Environment and Climate Change Canada which shows La Ronge had 3.4 millimeters of precipitation last month compared to a normal rate of 18.7 mm. Prince Albert was also somewhat dry, coming in at the seventh driest, and Estevan was dry too with its fifth driest January.

“In terms of precipitation, there was some snow in January – the northern grain belt received some snow in the first half of January and the Far North benefitted from weather systems moving along the Northwest Territories border,” said meteorologist Terri Lang.

As for temperature, La Ronge had its 16th warmest January on record. The monthly mean temperature was -16.3C compared to a normal temperature of -18.8C. That’s a 2.5C departure from normal.

“I’ve often said that the average at the end of the month does not tell the whole story and that is certainly the case for January,” she added.

“Despite the record-breaking heat at the end of the month, temperatures actually came in below average over western parts of the province, which really got into the cold arctic air whereas more eastern regions came in above average.”

The plus temperatures in La Ronge lately will come to an end this weekend with the forecast on Sunday calling for -6C. The temperatures will continue to drop into the low-minus-teens, but there is a chance for snow on Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday.

Friday and Saturday are both expected to be sunny with a high of 5C on Friday and 3C on Saturday.
