Bombers explode for eight in win over Hawks

Feb 3, 2024 | 1:21 PM

The Nipawin Hawks have struggled with the Bombers the last couple years and Friday was no different as the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) club was blanked 8-0 in Flin Flon.

The loss extends Nipawin’s losing streak to six games with the setback being the Hawks’s 10th straight defeat against the Bombers.

Optimistic going into the game, the Hawks weren’t ready from the opening faceoff as the Bombers scored four goals in the first 8:38 of the game and cruised to the win. Head Coach Tad Kozun was at a loss for words on the postgame show on 750 Beach Radio.

“I really don’t know what to say, we better be ready to go tomorrow, there is only one way to go but up,” he lamented.

Nipawin did respond in the second half of the first period and second, holding the explosive Bombers offence at bay, but the home team added four more in the third period, including two on affiliate player callup Jaidyn Shaw who saw action after starter Damon Cunningham was mercifully pulled by Kozun with a game less than 24 hours away.

“I thought we had a little pushback in the second, but you are already down 4-0 and didn’t start the game on time, there was just nothing there tonight,” Kozun concluded.

The Melfort Mustangs visit the Centennial Arena on Saturday to take on the Hawks for the fifth meeting of the year between the rivals.

With Nipawin’s six-game slide, the club has slid outside the playoff picture by a point with 15 games remaining. The positive news is fifth place is only five points ahead.

Saturday’s matchup with the Mustangs begins at 7 p.m. with the doors at the ‘Cage’ opening at 5:45 p.m.
