Battlefords local, Bugg commits to University of Manitoba Bisons

North Battleford’s Taylor Bugg has announced her commitment to join one of the top post-secondary volleyball programs in the country this fall, with the University of Manitoba Bisons.

Bugg said the decision to commit came together fairly quickly after going down to Winnipeg for a visit in mid-January, where she was able to spend a weekend touring the campus, watching the Bisons women’s team in action, and even taking part in a practice with the team.

“The most important thing for me was team culture, and when I went for my visit there, the team culture was really positive, and everyone was really nice there,” Bugg said. “I’m really excited for the opportunity because it’s a great school for volleyball and it has all the programs that I want to take for school.”

Bugg, who began playing competitive volleyball early in her youth, was in the sixth grade when she first got involved with Battlefords Volleyball Club. From there, she moved on to join the Sask Stealth, a club that practices in Saskatoon, which she’s been a part of for the better part of the last five years.

Currently in her senior year attending John Paul II Collegiate, Bugg has also played a pivotal role in the success of the Crusaders senior girls’ program in recent years, helping lead the team in their quest to three straight provincial silver medals over the last three years, including serving as team captain her final year.

She said now getting a chance to take her game to the next level with the Bisons, it is a goal and a dream she’s been working towards for some time.

“I always wanted to [compete at the post-secondary level], I just didn’t know if I’d be able to,” Bugg said, reflecting on her journey to where she is today. “I wasn’t sure at first if I’d be able to do it, but after talking to some of my coaches, I decided to start emailing schools and give it a shot and it all worked out.”

Bugg said she’s grateful for the support and belief from her coaches, teammates, and family that have allowed her to get to this point.

The University of Manitoba Bisons are currently ranked third overall in the national U Sports rankings, with a 17-3 record on the season.
