A man responsible for a violent assault in Prince Albert’s west flat, in which the resident of a home was attacked and cut repeatedly with a machete, has received a five-year prison sentence.

Chaz Alexander Umpherville, 30, appeared at provincial court on Jan. 31 and guilty pleas were entered to aggravated assault and intimidation of a Justice System Participant.

On Jan. 5, at approximately 8:25 p.m., police were dispatched to the 1000 block of River St. W. for a report of an assault.

A concerned neighbor reported that a male, visibly injured and seeking assistance, had knocked on their door. Upon arrival, officers located the victim and discovered he had serious but non life threatening injuries.

The man was soon after transported by Parkland Ambulance to Victoria Hospital for treatment.

The subsequent investigation revealed the violent incident involved two males, one known to the victim, had entered the home of the victim armed with an edged weapon. The suspects then assaulted the victim, robbed his cash, and fled.

According to information provided to paNOW, the victim suffered lacerations to his head and arms, and had parts of four different fingers cut off.

Umpherville was also previously charged with possession of Canadian currency obtained by crime, however the Crown withdrew that charge.

Following his release from prison, Umpherville will be prohibited for life from owning or possessing any firearms or explosives.

The second suspect has, as of Wednesday, not been located.
