The Hawks have their biggest victory of the season on Friday, a 5-1 triumph over Kindersley in Nipawin.

Battling for their Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) postseason lives against several teams, including Kindersley the Hawks jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first period and never looked back downing the Klippers for the fourth time this season.

Eric Hoiness opened the scoring with his first SJHL shorthanded goal and added a pair of assists. The 18-year-old forward has 10 goals in his rookie campaign. He said the win was a critical one and the team played well.

Yeah, it was huge,” he said after the game. “It was a good team effort. We can keep pushing forward now and get a little streak going.”

Chase Visser added his ninth goal of the season in the opening period, Evan Forrest notched his 15th of the year.

Maguire Ratzlaff added the Hawks second shorthanded goal of the game early in the second period, Kindersley cut the lead to 4-1, but Braeden Jockims also reached double digits in goals with his 10th of the season as well to cap the scoring. Hoiness said getting back into the goal column will ease his mind after not scoring in five games.

“Yeah, that’s huge just for my confidence, I thought my line played really good today. We had a lot of chances, just got to keep it going now,” Hoiness said.

Damon Cunningham was tested 33 times by Kindersley shooters, the Hawks’ goaltender made 32 saves in the victory.

The Hawks have the rest of the Family Day Long Weekend off, the team returns to action Thursday in Notre Dame against the Hounds. Nipawin is in Estevan Friday and meets Weyburn on Saturday before closing the month against the Red Wings at home on Feb. 28. Aside from the Hounds, the Bruins and Weyburn are two of the teams in the playoff push creating a season-defining road trip.

“These next few games are huge, the season depends on it,” Hoiness admitted. “We just have to find some wins.”
